How to Create a Journal Index That Lasts for Years

A lasting journal index is not a complete catalog. It is a small map of the pages, people, projects, and turning points you expect to seek again.

Choose the job of the index

Decide whether the index should help you find important events, follow a long project, revisit recurring questions, or locate family stories. One index can support several jobs, but each entry should earn its place by being useful later.

Record four pieces of information

• Date: when the page belongs in your timeline.
• Title: the most recognizable detail.
• Thread: one project, person, place, or theme.
• Reason to return: a decision, photograph, question, or turning point.

In a paper notebook, add the page number. In a digital journal, the title, journal name, date, and tag can carry the same work.

Index after writing, not before

Do not interrupt an honest entry to classify it. During a weekly or monthly review, choose the few pages that deserve a signpost. Most ordinary entries can remain outside the index and still belong to the archive.

Keep the vocabulary stable
