7 Recenter Ideas You Can Create for Yourself
Seven starting points for a Recenter: failure, anger, exhaustion, comparison, feeling lost, intense excitement, and the overconfidence that can follow a big success.
A blank Recenter can feel difficult. Start with a sentence you have thought more than once: “I always do this when…” Then write for the version of you who will recognise it.
Begin with a recurring pattern
- After a setback, I treat one bad result as proof that I am bad at everything.
- When I am angry, I read every sentence as an attack.
- When I am exhausted, I believe I need to solve my whole life tonight.
- After good news, I want to make the next big decision immediately.
Choose a direction that is yours
Try “able to see this as one event, not my whole future,” “curious enough to understand before replying,” or “excited and still able to see the whole decision.” You are not classifying yourself. You are choosing a place you would like to return to.
Add one reminder and one action
A reminder might be a note, a photograph, or a message from an earlier self. An action might be to sleep, walk, ask someone a question, or put the draft away until morning. Keep the action small enough to be possible in the state it is for.
Let the Recenter stay personal
The best Recenter is the one you recognise. It does not need to sound wise to anyone else. For a fuller walk-through, read how to create your first Recenter. If the state is overwhelm, begin with making the moment smaller.
