What to Do When You’re Too Excited to Think Clearly

Excitement can be a beautiful state. It can also make urgency, confidence, and the upside of a choice feel much larger than everything else. You do not have to flatten the feeling to look carefully.

Separate the experience from the commitment

You can celebrate the offer, the yes, the launch, or the surprise before deciding what it requires from you. Being moved by something and being ready to commit are different things.

I am allowed to enjoy this before I know what I will do about it.

Ask what waiting would cost

Not every opportunity can wait. Many can. Ask: what becomes worse if I look again tomorrow? What would I want to know if I were less excited? What would have to be true for this to be a bad move?

Borrow another perspective

Choose someone who can celebrate first and ask careful questions second. You are not asking them to take the joy away. You are asking them to help you see the whole decision while the feeling is still bright.

Write the delay rule while calm
