Day One Alternatives: Find a Journal That Fits Your Life
Compare Day One alternatives for a free diary, a one-time purchase, or a notebook in your browser. Check prices, photo features, and import limits before moving.
If you are leaving Day One to avoid a subscription, compare Diarium first. If you want a free online diary, look at Penzu Basic or keep Day One Basic. If you want a notebook-style space for writing and photo collections in your browser, consider Inpages.
This guide is written by the Inpages team. It compares a short list by the job you need done, rather than ranking every journal app.

For a fresh notebook: Inpages
Inpages suits someone starting a new chapter: a daily diary, a record of a project, or travel memories. You can keep photos with your writing and choose photos from a journal for a digital Photo Book. Essential includes one journal and one Photo Book; Premium lets you keep separate collections.
Browser access alone is not a reason to switch: Day One has it too. Choose Inpages because its writing and reading experience fits you. The Inpages and Day One comparison covers the costs and practical trade-offs.
For an existing archive: Diarium
Diarium supports Day One migration and offers Windows, Android, iOS, and Mac apps. Investigate it if bringing years of entries is your first requirement. Try a small import with photos and dates before moving everything.
Inpages does not currently offer a Day One importer, so it is better suited to new writing than a full archive move.
For a free online diary: Penzu or Day One Basic
A free plan may be enough if you mainly want to write. Penzu has free unlimited entries. Day One Basic has unlimited text entries and journals. Start there if a free plan is essential.
Inpages requires a paid membership before the first entry. Our Inpages and Penzu comparison explains what the paid options add.
Check the way out before moving in
Download a sample export from your current app. Open it and check dates, text, and photos. An export is not always a file another app can import. Keep your original archive while you try a different journal.

Choose for the next month of writing
Write down your deciding requirement: a free plan, a one-time payment, importing old entries, or a place for new stories and photos. Rule out apps that do not meet it before comparing smaller features.
