Lost Your Journal Password? How Recovery Keys Work

Losing a journal password can mean two different things: losing access to the account, or losing the secret needed to decrypt protected writing. A Recovery Key exists to keep those problems from becoming the same permanent loss.

Account recovery and content recovery are different

A service can often verify an email address and let you choose a new login password. That restores the account door. It does not necessarily restore a user-held encryption key that the service never possessed.

If protected entries were encrypted with a Master Key on your device, readable access depends on recovering that key. The OWASP Key Management guidance states the underlying reality plainly: data encrypted with a lost key cannot be recovered.

What a Recovery Key does

A Recovery Key is a portable copy or representation of the secret needed to unlock encrypted data. It lets a new browser or device regain access without asking the service to keep a readable master key.

In Inpages.me, an unlocked browser can export the existing Master Key as an account-bound Recovery Key. Import and verification happen in the browser. Inpages does not receive or store the exported key.

Store it away from the journal

Anyone who obtains the Recovery Key may be able to read the encrypted journal. Do not paste it into a Memory, leave it in a shared downloads folder, or send it through a casual chat.

Keep one clearly labeled copy in a private location separate from the everyday device. If you choose a physical copy, protect it from casual access and damage. If you choose a digital copy, use storage whose access and backup model you understand.

Practice recovery before it is urgent

Confirm that the export is complete, that you know where it is, and that the account identifier is recognizable. Do not wait for a lost laptop or forgotten password to learn the recovery flow.

Also review what logout does. On Inpages.me, logout clears the browser’s active Master Key. The next unlock needs the encryption password, a Recovery Key, or another still-authorized route to the key.

Accept the trade-off before sensitive writing

A provider that cannot read protected entries may also be unable to rescue them after every key copy is lost. That is not a customer-support failure; it is part of the privacy boundary.
