How to Keep a Digital Journal Private on a Shared Computer
Keep a digital journal safer on a shared computer with careful sessions, vault habits, browser profiles, downloads, extensions, and logout checks.
A shared computer changes the privacy problem. Encryption may protect stored journal data from the server, but the page becomes readable on the screen after you unlock it. Your habits around sessions, browser storage, downloads, and extensions now matter just as much.
Use a separate operating-system account
When possible, sign in to a separate user account on the computer. This keeps browser history, saved passwords, downloads, and profile storage away from other everyday users. A private or incognito window reduces some traces but does not turn an untrusted machine into a trusted one.
Avoid entering highly sensitive writing on a public kiosk, hotel business center, library terminal, or device you suspect may be monitored.
Do not save the journal password
Decline browser prompts to save the password on a shared profile. If you use a password manager, make sure its vault locks before another person takes the computer.
A unique password still matters, but remember the distinction described in password-protected diaries versus encrypted journals: login security and content encryption are separate layers.
Treat the unlocked vault as readable
Once a browser holds the decryption key, an unlocked page can be read by someone at the keyboard or by malicious code running with access to the browser. Review installed extensions before unlocking. Do not leave the tab open while you step away.
The OWASP HTML5 Security guidance cautions against assuming browser-side storage is confidential from a person or process that can read the browser profile.
Check downloads, previews, and copied text
A Recovery Key, exported journal, downloaded photograph, screenshot, or copied paragraph may remain after the journal session ends. Save nothing to a shared downloads folder. Clear the clipboard when it contains sensitive text and remove only files you created, without disturbing another person’s data.
Log out, then verify
Close the entry, sign out through the product, and confirm that returning to the page requires authentication and vault unlock. Closing a tab alone may leave the session active.
